About this book

An Easterner travels to Wyoming in the 1870s and meets the Virginian, a tall, quiet, humorous cowboy whose real name we never learn. Over the following years the Virginian becomes foreman of a large ranch, courts Molly Stark Wood, a spirited schoolteacher from Vermont, faces cattle rustlers, among them his old friend Steve, and finally the villain Trampas, whom he once answered with the famous words: 'When you call me that, smile!'

Context and significance

Owen Wister (1860–1938), a Philadelphia lawyer who spent his summers in Wyoming, published the novel in 1902, and it established the western as a popular genre, with its code of honour and its showdown in the street. He dedicated it to his friend Theodore Roosevelt. Compare Riders of the Purple Sage.
