About this book

Thomas Carlyle tells the story of the French Revolution not as a dry history but as a vast drama in the present tense, from the death of Louis XV in 1774 through the storming of the Bastille, the flight of the king to Varennes, the September Massacres and the Terror, to the 'whiff of grapeshot' with which the young Napoleon Bonaparte put down a rising in Paris in 1795. Kings, crowds, orators and victims all pass before the reader in vivid scenes.

Context and significance

Carlyle (1795–1881), a Scottish writer, published the book in 1837 after a disaster: the only manuscript of the first volume was accidentally burned by a maid while on loan to John Stuart Mill, and he had to write it again from memory. Charles Dickens drew on it for A Tale of Two Cities.
