About this book

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the most popular poet of nineteenth-century America, and this volume gathers all his poetry: the long narrative poems Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha and The Courtship of Miles Standish; the Tales of a Wayside Inn, including 'Paul Revere's Ride'; short lyrics that generations learned by heart, such as 'A Psalm of Life', 'The Village Blacksmith', 'The Wreck of the Hesperus' and 'The Children's Hour'; his sonnets; and translations from many European languages.

Context and significance

Longfellow (1807–1882), a professor at Harvard who also translated Dante, wrote in clear, musical verse that made American history and legend part of popular memory. His reputation fell in the twentieth century, but many of his lines remain part of the language. Two of his long poems are also in the library separately: Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha.
