About this book

In the Netherlands of the fifteenth century, Gerard, a young scribe and illuminator meant by his family for the Church, falls in love with Margaret, the daughter of a poor scholar. Separated from her by his family's plots, he travels on foot through Germany, Burgundy and Italy, meeting thieves, soldiers, inns, plague and the Renaissance in Rome, while Margaret, pregnant, waits for him. Deceived into believing that she is dead, he becomes a friar, and when he returns, their love must live between the cloister and the hearth.

Context and significance

Charles Reade (1814–1884) published the novel in 1861, imagining the parents of the great humanist Erasmus, who is their child in the story, and it was long ranked among the finest historical novels in English. Compare George Eliot's Romola.
