About this book

Phineas Finn, the handsome, likeable son of an Irish country doctor, is elected to Parliament at twenty-five and goes to London, where he must make his way in politics and society without money. Helped by influential women, the clever Lady Laura Standish, the spirited heiress Violet Effingham and the mysterious widow Madame Max Goesler, he rises in office, until his conscience forces him to choose between his career and his principles on the question of Irish tenant rights.

Context and significance

Published in 1869, the second of Anthony Trollope's six Palliser novels, it offers a lively, realistic picture of Victorian politics, which Trollope knew well, having stood for Parliament himself and lost. Read his The Last Chronicle of Barset.
