About this book

In 1284 the town of Hamelin in Germany is overrun by rats. A strange piper in a coat of red and yellow offers to rid the town of them for a thousand guilders, and plays a tune that draws every rat into the river Weser to drown. But when the mayor and council refuse to pay, the piper plays a new tune, and all the children of Hamelin follow him out of the town and into a mountain, never to be seen again, except one lame boy who could not keep up.

Context and significance

Robert Browning (1812–1889) wrote the poem in 1842 for a sick child, the son of his friend the actor William Macready, retelling an old German legend. Compare Sonnets from the Portuguese by his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
