About this book

'Let us go then, you and I, when the evening is spread out against the sky like a patient etherised upon a table.' The first poem of this slim book follows J. Alfred Prufrock, a timid, ageing man, through foggy streets to a drawing room where women 'come and go, talking of Michelangelo', as he wonders whether he dares ask an 'overwhelming question' and fears he has 'measured out my life with coffee spoons'. The other poems include 'Portrait of a Lady', 'Preludes' and 'Rhapsody on a Windy Night'.

Context and significance

T. S. Eliot was twenty-eight when this, his first book, appeared in London in 1917, two years after Ezra Pound arranged the publication of 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' in a Chicago magazine. Its ironic, conversational voice and images of the modern city changed English poetry. Continue with The Waste Land.
