About this book

Gaius Valerius Catullus writes of love with a directness never heard before in Latin: his passion for 'Lesbia', a married woman of Roman high society, from the first kisses ('give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred') to bitterness and betrayal ('I hate and I love'). Alongside the love poems stand tender lines at his brother's grave, savage insults against Julius Caesar and other politicians, wedding songs and a long poem on the marriage of Peleus and Thetis.

Context and significance

Catullus (about 84–54 BC) died young, and his poems survived the Middle Ages in a single manuscript found in Verona. This translation, in the metres of the original, is by Robinson Ellis. Compare Ovid's Art of Love.
