About this book

On the eve of his regiment's departure for the war in the Sudan, Harry Feversham, the son of a famous general, resigns his commission. Three of his fellow officers send him white feathers, the symbol of cowardice, and his fiancée, Ethne, adds a fourth. Disgraced, Harry decides to win back his honour by returning each feather, and travels in disguise into the Sudan, where he saves his former friends one by one, among them Jack Durrance, who loses his sight, and Captain Trench, imprisoned in the terrible prison of Omdurman.

Context and significance

A. E. W. Mason (1865–1948) published the novel in 1902, and it has been filmed several times. It is a study of fear and courage, although its picture of the Sudanese reflects the imperial attitudes of its age. Kipling's The Light That Failed is also shaped by the Sudan campaigns.
