About this book

John Henry Newman, the most famous English clergyman of his century to leave the Church of England for the Catholic Church, tells the history of his religious opinions: his evangelical boyhood, his years at Oxford as a leader of the Oxford Movement, which tried to recover the Catholic roots of Anglicanism, his growing doubts and his reception into the Catholic Church in 1845. He writes to show that he was honest at every step.

Context and significance

Newman (1801–1890) wrote the book in a few weeks in 1864, in reply to Charles Kingsley, the author of The Water-Babies, who had accused him of not caring for truth; its sincerity won over many readers who disagreed with him. He became a cardinal in 1879 and was declared a saint in 2019. Compare The Confessions of St. Augustine.
