About this book

In the city of Pompeii in AD 79, the young Athenian Glaucus loves the beautiful Ione, a Greek woman of Naples, but the sinister Arbaces, an Egyptian priest of Isis, wants her for himself and plots to destroy Glaucus. Nydia, a blind flower girl who secretly loves Glaucus, is caught up in the intrigue. Then, as Glaucus is about to be thrown to a lion in the amphitheatre, Mount Vesuvius erupts, and in the darkness only the blind girl can find the way to the sea.

Context and significance

Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803–1873) wrote the novel in 1834 after visiting the excavations and seeing Karl Bryullov's painting The Last Day of Pompeii in Milan, and it became one of the most popular historical novels of the century. Compare Kingsley's Hypatia.
