About this book

In the London of 1984, democracy has been replaced by a king chosen at random, and the lot falls on Auberon Quin, a joker who decides, for fun, to give each borough of London its own medieval pageantry, banners and city guard. But one young man, Adam Wayne, the Provost of Notting Hill, takes it all completely seriously, and when developers want to drive a road through his little street, he raises an army to defend it, and London is plunged into a war of the boroughs.

Context and significance

G. K. Chesterton published his first novel in 1904, a comic fantasy in praise of local patriotism and small, beloved places; it is sometimes said to have influenced Orwell's choice of the year 1984. Read The Man Who Was Thursday and Orthodoxy.
