About this book

Benjamin Franklin began writing this account of his life in 1771 as a letter to his son, and kept adding to it until shortly before his death. He tells how he ran away from his apprenticeship in Boston at seventeen and arrived in Philadelphia with a few coins and three bread rolls under his arm, and how he built a career as a printer, writer, scientist and public servant.

Context and significance

The most famous section is his plan for 'moral perfection', a list of thirteen virtues he tracked daily in a small book, honestly admitting his failures. Franklin (1706–1790), inventor of the lightning rod and bifocals and one of the founders of the United States, never finished the autobiography, which first appeared in French in 1791. It is one of the classics of self-improvement.
