About this book

This small book of spiritual advice, written in short chapters and brief sayings, teaches the reader to turn away from vanity, ambition and the love of praise, to bear suffering patiently, to know oneself honestly and to seek God in silence and humility. Its four books move from general counsel on the spiritual life to the inner life, to inward consolation and finally to the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Context and significance

It is traditionally attributed to Thomas à Kempis (about 1380–1471), a German-born monk who spent most of his long life copying manuscripts in a monastery near Zwolle in the Netherlands, and it grew out of the Devotio Moderna, a movement of simple, practical piety. Written in Latin in the early fifteenth century, it became, after the Bible, one of the most widely read Christian books, treasured by readers as different as Ignatius of Loyola and John Wesley.
