About this book

Lucius, a curious young Greek travelling in Thessaly, the land of witches, lodges in the house of a miser whose wife is a sorceress. Trying to copy her magic and turn himself into an owl, he rubs on the wrong ointment and becomes an ass. Kept from the roses that would restore him, he is stolen by robbers and passes from owner to owner, overhearing their stories, among them the lovely tale of Cupid and Psyche, until the goddess Isis appears to him in a vision and offers him salvation.

Context and significance

Apuleius (about 124–after 170), a philosopher and orator born at Madauros in North Africa, today's M'Daourouch in Algeria, wrote the only Latin novel that survives complete. This is William Adlington's lively English translation of 1566, which Shakespeare probably knew. Compare Lucian's True History.
