About this book

Cicero wrote and received hundreds of letters, to his closest friend Atticus, to his brother Quintus and to the leading men of Rome, and this first volume of a complete chronological collection begins with letters of 68 BC. They follow his rise to the consulship, his suppression of Catiline's conspiracy, his bitter exile and triumphant return, and the politics of the age of Pompey and Caesar, but they also show the private man: worrying about money and his villas, asking for books, joking, complaining and loving his family.

Context and significance

The letters were rediscovered by the poet Petrarch in Verona in 1345, and they give the most intimate picture we have of any person of the ancient world. This translation is by Evelyn S. Shuckburgh. Cicero's public voice is in his De Officiis, and the conspiracy of Catiline is told by Sallust in The Conspiracy of Catiline.
