About this book

Sir Willoughby Patterne, a handsome, rich young baronet admired by the whole county, believes himself the perfect English gentleman, but he is in fact a complete egoist who sees everyone around him only as a mirror of himself. Jilted once, he becomes engaged to Clara Middleton, a lively, intelligent young woman, who slowly realises with horror what marriage to him would mean and struggles to escape without scandal, helped by his quiet cousin, the scholar Vernon Whitford.

Context and significance

George Meredith (1828–1909) published this 'comedy in narrative' in 1879. Its witty, demanding style and its sympathy for a woman's right to choose her own life made it admired by many later writers, Virginia Woolf among them. Read Jane Austen's Emma for another clever comedy of courtship.
