About this book

One night at the Château du Glandier near Paris, cries and shots are heard from the locked room where Mathilde Stangerson, the daughter of a famous scientist, is sleeping. When the door is broken down, she is found badly injured, but the attacker has vanished from a room with no way out. The great detective Frédéric Larsan takes on the case, and so does Joseph Rouletabille, an eighteen-year-old newspaper reporter who trusts in 'the right end of reason'.

Context and significance

Gaston Leroux (1868–1927), later the author of The Phantom of the Opera, published the novel in 1907–1908, and it is one of the most famous 'locked-room' mysteries; Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr admired it. Compare Conan Doyle's The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
