About this book

John A. Lomax travelled through the American West collecting the songs that cowboys sang on the long cattle drives, around campfires and in saloons. Among them are 'The Old Chisholm Trail', 'Whoopee Ti Yi Yo, Git Along, Little Dogies', 'The Cowboy's Lament', better known as 'The Streets of Laredo', 'Jesse James', 'Sam Bass' and 'Home on the Range', together with ballads of buffalo hunters, outlaws, miners and settlers, many of them never written down before.

Context and significance

Lomax (1867–1948), a Texan who later became one of America's greatest collectors of folk music, published the book in 1910 with a letter of encouragement from Theodore Roosevelt. It preserved a whole oral tradition just as the open range was disappearing. The history of that frontier is told in Turner's The Frontier in American History.
