About this book

Gabriel Syme, a poet who has joined a secret squad of philosophical policemen, manages to be elected to the central council of a world anarchist movement, whose seven members are named after the days of the week; he becomes Thursday. Their president, a huge and terrifying man called Sunday, seems to know everything. As Syme tries to stop a bombing, he finds that nothing and no one is what it seems.

Context and significance

G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) was a journalist, poet, novelist and Christian thinker famous for his love of paradox. Published in 1908 with the subtitle 'A Nightmare', this is his strangest and most exhilarating book, a spy thriller that turns into a philosophical fantasy. For his detective stories, read The Innocence of Father Brown.
