About this book

This collection introduced English readers to the folk tales of Russia, in a world of forests, frozen rivers and village huts. Here are the witch Baba Yaga, who lives in a hut that turns on chicken legs; Koshchei the Deathless, whose death is hidden in an egg inside a duck inside a hare; the warrior princess Marya Morevna; the Water King and his clever daughter Vasilissa the Wise; and a host of devils, ghosts, vampires and wise fools. Ralston arranges the tales by theme and comments on their beliefs and their connections with the folklore of other lands.

Context and significance

William Ralston Shedden-Ralston (1828–1889), a librarian at the British Museum, published the book in 1873, translating mostly from the great collection of Alexander Afanasyev. It remains a fine introduction to Slavic folklore. Compare English Fairy Tales and Grimms' Fairy Tales.
