About this book

This handbook retells the myths of ancient Greece and Rome in clear, simple prose. The first part describes the gods, from Chaos, Uranus and Cronus to Zeus and the Olympians, the lesser gods of the sea, the earth and the underworld, and the Roman names and forms of each, together with their worship, temples, oracles and festivals. The second part tells the legends of the heroes: Heracles and his twelve labours, Perseus, Theseus and the Minotaur, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Oedipus and the heroes of the Trojan War.

Context and significance

E. M. Berens published the book in 1880 for students, illustrated with pictures of ancient statues, and it remains a handy reference for anyone who meets these names in literature and art. For the myths told as stories for children, read Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales; for the poem that told many of them first, read the Iliad.
