About this book

Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote poems unlike any others of his time, praising God in the beauty of the world in packed, musical language and a new 'sprung rhythm' based on stresses rather than syllables: 'The Windhover', 'Pied Beauty' ('Glory be to God for dappled things'), 'God's Grandeur', 'Spring and Fall', the long ode 'The Wreck of the Deutschland', and the dark 'terrible sonnets' of his last years in Dublin.

Context and significance

Hopkins (1844–1889), a Jesuit priest, published almost nothing in his lifetime. His friend Robert Bridges, the Poet Laureate, edited this first collection in 1918, almost thirty years after his death, and it made Hopkins one of the most influential poets of the twentieth century. Compare Lyrical Ballads.
