About this book

In the reign of Elizabeth I, Amyas Leigh, a big, brave young man from Bideford in Devon, sails with Francis Drake around the world and then to the Spanish Main in search of his brother and of the beautiful Rose Salterne, whom many young men love and who has run away with a Spanish nobleman. Through battles in Ireland, adventures in the jungles of South America and the fight against the Spanish Armada in 1588, his hatred of Spain grows until it nearly destroys him.

Context and significance

Charles Kingsley published the novel in 1855, during the Crimean War, as a patriotic adventure, and it was so popular that a new seaside town in Devon was named after it. Its hostility to Catholic Spain reflects the prejudices of its age. Read Kingsley's The Water-Babies.
