About this book

Antony Gillingham, a young man of private means, arrives at the Red House to visit his friend Bill Beverley just after a shot is heard. Robert Ablett, the black sheep brother of the owner, back from Australia after fifteen years, lies dead in a locked office, and the owner, Mark Ablett, has disappeared. With the cheerful Bill as his Watson, Antony begins to investigate the house, its secret passage and its guests.

Context and significance

A. A. Milne (1882–1956), the author of Winnie-the-Pooh, published his only detective novel in 1922, and it was very popular in the golden age of detective fiction, though Raymond Chandler later mocked its plot. Compare Bentley's Trent's Last Case.
