About this book

During the French and Indian War, around Lake Ontario, Natty Bumppo, now known as the Pathfinder, a scout in his thirties, guides Mabel Dunham, the daughter of a British sergeant, to her father at a frontier fort, together with Chingachgook and the young sailor Jasper Western. Mabel's father hopes she will marry the Pathfinder, who falls deeply in love with her, but a traitor in the garrison and an attack on a lonely island blockhouse test them all.

Context and significance

James Fenimore Cooper published the novel in 1840; it is the only Leatherstocking tale in which Natty falls in love, and one of the first American novels set on the Great Lakes. Read The Last of the Mohicans and The Deerslayer.
