About this book

Why, asks Peter Kropotkin, should anyone go hungry in a world that can produce enough for everyone? In this book he describes how a society without government or private property might work after a revolution: the people would take over houses, land, food and factories and share them according to need, with everyone working four or five hours a day in freely organised cooperatives, leaving time for science, art and leisure.

Context and significance

Published in French in 1892, the book is the classic statement of anarchist communism, and it influenced movements from the Spanish Revolution of the 1930s to modern cooperatives. Kropotkin (1842–1921), born a Russian prince, was imprisoned in both Russia and France for his ideas. Read his Mutual Aid, and compare Proudhon's What Is Property?.
