About this book

Two distant cousins, both named Allan Armadale, are bound together by a terrible family secret: the father of one killed the father of the other. Growing up, they become close friends, one cheerful and rich, the other, who calls himself Ozias Midwinter, haunted by guilt and by a prophetic dream. Into their lives comes Lydia Gwilt, a beautiful, red-haired adventuress with a criminal past, who plots to marry the rich Armadale and inherit his fortune.

Context and significance

Wilkie Collins published the novel in 1866, and Lydia Gwilt, a scheming but strangely sympathetic villainess, shocked Victorian critics. It is one of the most intricate sensation novels of the age. Read Collins's The Woman in White and The Moonstone.
