About this book

'He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.' André-Louis Moreau, a young lawyer in Brittany with no faith in anything, swears revenge when his idealistic friend is killed in a duel by the arrogant Marquis de La Tour d'Azyr, just before the French Revolution. Hunted for his fiery speeches, he hides with a troupe of travelling actors and becomes famous as Scaramouche, the clown, then a fencing master and a deputy in the revolutionary Assembly.

Context and significance

Rafael Sabatini published the novel in 1921, and its first sentence is one of the best known in popular fiction. Read his Captain Blood and Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities.
