About this book

In 1685, Peter Blood, an Irish doctor living quietly in Somerset, is arrested for treating a wounded rebel after the failed rising of the Duke of Monmouth, condemned by the brutal Judge Jeffreys and sold as a slave in Barbados. Bought by a cruel planter, Colonel Bishop, he wins the sympathy of the colonel's niece Arabella. When Spanish raiders attack the island, Blood and his fellow convicts seize their ship and sail away to become the most feared and honourable pirates of the Caribbean.

Context and significance

Rafael Sabatini (1875–1950) published the novel in 1922, and the 1935 film made a star of Errol Flynn. Read Sabatini's Scaramouche and Stevenson's Treasure Island.
