About this book

Padraic Colum retells the myths of the Norse gods as one continuous story for young readers: the building of Asgard, Odin's sacrifice of an eye for wisdom at the well of Mimir, the thunder god Thor's adventures among the giants, the mischief of Loki, the binding of the wolf Fenrir, the death of the beautiful Baldur, and finally Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods. The book also tells the heroic story of Sigurd, the dragon-slayer, and the cursed gold of the Volsungs.

Context and significance

Colum (1881–1972), an Irish poet and playwright, published the book in 1920 with illustrations by Willy Pogány, and its clear, poetic prose has introduced generations of children to Norse mythology. Its sources are the Eddas, such as The Younger Edda, and The Story of the Volsungs.
