About this book

The Dhammapada, 'the path of the teaching', is a collection of 423 short verses attributed to the Buddha, arranged in twenty-six chapters on themes such as the mind, vigilance, anger, the fool and the wise, happiness and the path to freedom from suffering. It opens with the famous lines: 'All that we are is the result of what we have thought.' Its sayings are simple, direct and practical, meant to be memorised and lived.

Context and significance

Part of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism, the verses were probably gathered in the third century BC. This translation by F. Max Müller (1823–1900), the German-born Oxford scholar who edited the great series Sacred Books of the East, was one of the first to bring the text to Western readers. Compare The Song Celestial and Tagore's Sadhana.
