About this book

Rama, the noble prince of Ayodhya, is about to be crowned when his father, bound by a promise to one of his queens, sends him into exile in the forest for fourteen years. His wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana go with him. In the forest, Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka, carries Sita away, and Rama, with the help of the monkey king Sugriva and the mighty Hanuman, who leaps across the sea to find her, builds a bridge to Lanka and wins her back in a great battle.

Context and significance

Attributed to the sage Valmiki, who is called the first poet, the Ramayana is one of the two great epics of India, and its story is still performed and celebrated across South and South-East Asia; the festival of Diwali marks Rama's return home. This verse translation, published in the 1870s, is by Ralph T. H. Griffith, principal of the college at Benares. India's other great epic is the Mahabharata.
