About this book

In 1745 Edward Waverley, a dreamy young English officer raised on romantic books, takes leave to visit his uncle's old friend, the Baron of Bradwardine, in the Scottish Lowlands, and is drawn north into the Highlands, where he is captivated by the Jacobite chieftain Fergus Mac-Ivor and his passionate sister Flora. Accused of treason by his own army, Waverley joins the rising of Bonnie Prince Charlie and fights at Prestonpans, until he must choose between romance and reality, and between Flora and the gentle Rose Bradwardine.

Context and significance

Published anonymously in 1814, Waverley was Sir Walter Scott's first novel and is often called the first historical novel in the modern sense; it was so successful that his later books were known as the 'Waverley novels'. Its subtitle, ''Tis Sixty Years Since', marks the distance between reader and past. Read Scott's Ivanhoe.
