About this book

In these essays the anarchist Emma Goldman explains what anarchism really stands for: a society based on free cooperation without the coercion of state, church or private property. She writes on minorities and majorities, the psychology of political violence, prisons as a social crime and failure, patriotism as a menace to liberty, the Spanish educator Francisco Ferrer, the hypocrisy of Puritanism, the trafficking of women, marriage and love, and the modern drama as a weapon of social criticism.

Context and significance

Goldman (1869–1940), born in Lithuania, was a famous speaker in the United States until she was deported to Russia in 1919, where she soon broke with the Bolsheviks. The book, published in 1910, includes a biographical sketch by Hippolyte Havel. Her teachers included Peter Kropotkin, author of The Conquest of Bread, and Mikhail Bakunin, author of God and the State.
