About this book

Every morning, Arnold Bennett writes, you wake to find your purse magically filled with twenty-four hours, the same for rich and poor, and no one can take them from you. Yet most people, especially office workers who spend their days at dull jobs, waste the hours outside work. He offers practical advice: use the morning journey to concentrate the mind, set aside ninety minutes three evenings a week for serious reading or the arts, begin modestly, and never let the plan become a tyrant.

Context and significance

Bennett (1867–1931), a successful novelist, published the little book in 1908 for readers of a London newspaper, and its gentle, humorous advice still speaks to anyone who feels that life is slipping away. His great novel of ordinary lives is The Old Wives' Tale, and a sterner guide to the mind is James Allen's As a Man Thinketh.
