About this book

In 1793, in the new settlement of Templeton on Lake Otsego in upstate New York, Judge Marmaduke Temple presides over a frontier community that is felling forests, netting fish by the thousand and shooting pigeons by the flock. On the edge of the town lives the old hunter Natty Bumppo, Leatherstocking, with his aged Mohican friend Chingachgook, now called Indian John, and a mysterious young man, Oliver Edwards, who seems to bear a grudge against the judge.

Context and significance

Published in 1823, The Pioneers was the first of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, though it tells of Natty's old age, and it drew on the life of Cooper's own father, who founded Cooperstown. Its scenes of wasteful slaughter of wildlife make it one of the first American novels with an environmental conscience. Read The Deerslayer, which tells of Natty's youth.
