About this book

In early eighteenth-century Scotland, Robert Wringhim is raised by a fanatical Calvinist minister who teaches him that he is one of the elect, predestined for salvation whatever he does. Soon after he learns this, Robert meets a mysterious, charming stranger, Gil-Martin, who can take on the face of anyone and who persuades him that killing sinners is God's work. The story is told twice: first by an editor piecing together the events, then in Robert's own confession, found in his grave a century later.

Context and significance

James Hogg (1770–1835), known as 'the Ettrick Shepherd' because he had worked as a shepherd in the Scottish Borders, published the novel anonymously in 1824. Neglected for a century, it is now hailed as a masterpiece of psychological horror and a forerunner of Jekyll and Hyde.
