About this book

Claude Wheeler, the sensitive, restless son of a prosperous Nebraska farmer, feels out of place on the farm and in his loveless marriage to Enid, a cold, religious young woman. When America enters the First World War he enlists, survives an influenza epidemic on the troopship crossing the Atlantic, and in the army and on the battlefields of France finds, for the first time, a sense of purpose and comradeship.

Context and significance

Willa Cather based Claude on her cousin G. P. Cather, who was killed in France in 1918, and published the novel in 1922; it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, though some critics, Hemingway among them, thought its war scenes unconvincing. Read My Ántonia and A Lost Lady.
