About this book

Jennie Gerhardt, the gentle, beautiful daughter of a poor German immigrant family in Columbus, Ohio, works with her mother cleaning in a hotel, where she attracts the attention of a kind, middle-aged senator, who promises to marry her but dies suddenly, leaving her pregnant. Later she becomes the companion of Lester Kane, the son of a rich carriage manufacturer, who loves her but cannot marry her without losing his inheritance.

Context and significance

Theodore Dreiser published the novel in 1911, his second after Sister Carrie. Like that book, it shocked readers by refusing to punish its heroine for breaking moral rules, and it is one of the most compassionate portraits of a woman in American fiction.
