About this book

In 1697 Charles Perrault published a small book of fairy tales that gave Europe some of its most famous stories in their classic form: Little Red Riding-Hood, Blue Beard and his forbidden room, the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, the Master Cat or Puss-in-Boots, Cinderella and her little glass slipper, Riquet with the Tuft, Little Thumb and his brothers, The Fairies, The Ridiculous Wishes and Donkey-Skin. Each tale ends with a witty moral in verse, often addressed with irony to the adult readers of the French court.

Context and significance

Perrault (1628–1703), a member of the French Academy, wrote the tales from old folk stories, and they were later retold by the Brothers Grimm and by countless others. This edition, of 1922, is illustrated by the Irish artist Harry Clarke, with translations by Robert Samber and J. E. Mansion. Compare Grimms' Fairy Tales.
