About this book

Pepe Rey, a brilliant young engineer from Madrid with modern scientific ideas, comes to the old cathedral town of Orbajosa to marry his cousin Rosario, daughter of his aunt Doña Perfecta, a wealthy widow admired for her piety. But the town, ruled by tradition and by the canon Don Inocencio, sees him as an atheist and an intruder; his aunt, outwardly gentle, turns against him with ruthless determination, and the conflict between progress and fanaticism ends in tragedy.

Context and significance

Benito Pérez Galdós (1843–1920), the greatest Spanish novelist since Cervantes, published the novel in 1876, and its portrait of religious intolerance in provincial Spain caused a stir. This translation is by Mary J. Serrano. Compare Manzoni's The Betrothed.
