About this book

A young Englishman, Guy Mannering, lodging one night at Ellangowan in south-west Scotland, casts the horoscope of the laird's newborn son, Harry Bertram, and finds danger ahead. At five the boy disappears, kidnapped by smugglers, and the family is ruined. Years later a young officer, Captain Brown, returns from India, unaware of his origins, and with the help of the old gypsy Meg Merrilies, the learned and simple Dominie Sampson and the farmer Dandie Dinmont, the lost heir is restored.

Context and significance

Walter Scott published the novel in 1815, the year after Waverley, and it was an immediate success; the Dandie Dinmont terrier is named after its farmer. Read Scott's Ivanhoe.
