About this book

On Benefit Street in Providence, Rhode Island, stands an old house where, for generations, people have sickened and died. The narrator, who has been fascinated by the house since childhood, investigates its history with his scholarly uncle, Dr Elihu Whipple: the deaths of the families who lived there, the strange words spoken by the dying in French, a pale fungus in the cellar shaped like a doubled-up human figure. At last the two men decide to spend a night in the cellar with scientific instruments to confront whatever is there.

Context and significance

H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) wrote the story in 1924, based on a real house in his beloved Providence, and it was first published in a magazine only after his death. It is one of his finest tales of a horror rooted in history and place. His later cosmic horror includes The Call of Cthulhu and The Colour Out of Space.
