About this book

King Henry VIII of England wrote these seventeen love letters, some in French and some in English, to Anne Boleyn in the years around 1527 and 1528, while he was trying to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled so that he could marry her. They show the king as an impatient lover, pleading, complaining of her silence and of the slowness of the Pope, sending her gifts and meat from his hunting, and signing with his initials and a heart.

Context and significance

Anne became queen in 1533 and was executed three years later; the king's break with Rome over the marriage began the English Reformation. The originals are, curiously, in the Vatican Library, where they may have been taken as evidence. This edition adds notes on their history. The religious struggles that followed are told, from a Protestant point of view, in Fox's Book of Martyrs.
