About this book

Pliny the Younger, a wealthy lawyer and senator of the early Roman Empire, published these polished letters to friends, family and the emperor Trajan. They describe his villas, his work in the law courts, his literary circle and his love for his young wife, and include two famous letters to the historian Tacitus about the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, in which his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died, and a letter to Trajan asking how to deal with the Christians of Bithynia.

Context and significance

Pliny (about 61–113) wrote the letters with publication in mind, and they are one of the richest pictures of Roman life. This is William Melmoth's translation, revised by F. C. T. Bosanquet. Compare Tacitus's Germania and Agricola.
