About this book

In twenty books, Flavius Josephus tells the history of the Jewish people for Greek and Roman readers, from the creation of the world through the stories of the Hebrew Bible, the Persian and Greek periods, the revolt of the Maccabees and the reign of Herod the Great, up to the eve of the great revolt against Rome in AD 66. He adds much that is not in the Bible, and his short passages about John the Baptist and Jesus have been debated for centuries.

Context and significance

Josephus finished the work in Rome around AD 93, after his Wars of the Jews, and it is an essential source for the history of Judea under Herod and the Romans. This is the classic translation of 1737 by William Whiston.
