About this book

Flavius Josephus tells the history of the great Jewish revolt against Rome: its background under the Maccabees and Herod the Great, the outbreak of war in AD 66, the campaigns of Vespasian in Galilee, where Josephus himself commanded the rebel forces until his surrender at Jotapata, and the terrible siege of Jerusalem by Titus in AD 70, which ended with the burning of the Temple. It closes with the fall of the desert fortress of Masada.

Context and significance

Josephus (37–about 100), born into a priestly family in Jerusalem, went over to the Romans, took the family name of the emperors and wrote the book in Rome as a witness to events he had lived through. It is the main source for the history of the region in the first century. This is the classic translation of 1737 by William Whiston. Compare Tacitus.
