About this book

Mark Robarts, the young vicar of Framley, owes his good living to the formidable Lady Lufton, but he is flattered into the company of a fashionable set and signs bills for a charming, penniless member of Parliament, Mr Sowerby, which soon threaten him with ruin. Meanwhile his sister Lucy and Lady Lufton's son, Lord Lufton, fall in love, though Lady Lufton has chosen a grander bride for him, and Lucy proudly refuses to marry without his mother's consent.

Context and significance

The fourth of Anthony Trollope's six Barsetshire novels, Framley Parsonage was serialised in the new Cornhill Magazine in 1860 and 1861 and made him a famous novelist. Read The Warden, Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne.
