About this book

This is the first volume of Edward William Lane's famous English translation of the Thousand and One Nights. It begins with the frame story: King Shahriyar, betrayed by his wife, marries a new bride each night and has her killed at dawn, until Shahrazad, the vizier's clever daughter, tells him stories that she breaks off unfinished each morning. Among the tales here are the Merchant and the Jinni, the Fisherman and the Jinni with its sealed brass bottle, and the Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad, with the stories of the three wandering dervishes.

Context and significance

Lane (1801–1876) lived for years in Cairo and translated from the Arabic edition printed at Bulaq, adding long notes on Arab customs and beliefs; he left out tales he thought unsuitable for family reading. This edition, prepared by his nephew Edward Stanley Poole, has hundreds of engravings by William Harvey. Lane's notes were later published as Arabian Society in the Middle Ages, and Burton's fuller version begins in The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night.
